Course B 2.24        Introduction to the use of computers

10 meetings starting Tuesday 17th January 2012   from 10 a.m. to 12 noon        Cost £30

This 10-meeting course will start from scratch and is intended for beginners or near beginners. Participants with laptops are encouraged to bring them along.  Experience suggests that many of those who attend are likely to have a special interest in using the Internet, particularly for sending and receiving emails from family and friends wherever they are in the world. Other uses of the internet for such things as shopping, banking, booking travel tickets, finding out bus times and so on will be covered by means of practical exercises.

Time will be spent on basic matters relating to the use of a computer.  It is essential for participants to have the use of a computer between meetings. The emphasis will be on ‘learning by doing – not by listening’, and I assume that participants wish to use their computers for real applications and are prepared to spend time doing the exercises given out at each meeting.  The initial experience and competence of participants is variable so that some may well find the first exercises rather easy.   Throughout the course I will usually be assisted by a member of the OIR Computer Group who will provide extra tutorial help when  necessary.

Course DP 13         Digital Photography

10 meetings starting Tuesday 17th January 2012   from 2 p.m to 4 p.m               Cost £30

Many people now have digital cameras but  few have explored the numerous facilities now generally available on these cameras.   The first  meetings of this course/workshop will be devoted to the basics of taking pictures, transferring them to a computer for simple editing, and to the ways of  sharing  pictures with family and friends via email.  An examination of the problems and opportunities for printing photos  follow.  Much use will be made of Picasa, a very good free photo editing and management  program provided by Google.  The topics selected thereafter will depend on the particular interests of those present.  A possible outcome, for example, is for some to concentrate on the scanning of 35mm slides while others examine the scanning of old prints - in both cases there are likely benefits from examining the results and comparing methods.  The outcome of this approach is  better described as a workshop rather  than a course.  In my view this format should appeal  to those with quite varied levels of experience with digital photography.
